This workshop will give participants hands-on experience with the workflow presented at the 2016 FOSS4G North America meeting for using QGIS-generated SVG files in Inkscape, including how to build a basic map in QGIS, import it into Inkscape, and work with tools such as fonts, design elements, and alignment tools, to make a map that is truly their own style. Participants in this workshop will leave with a clear understanding of how to use Inkscape to refine static cartographic works started in QGIS. With some help from graphic design software, maps can have the signature of their cartographer instead.
Maps built in the map composer of any GIS program often have the signature look of their software of origin. It has been updated, for use at FOSS4G 2018, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to use QGIS 3 and the current version of Inkscape (0.92). You could also look for techniques used for creating metro maps, they can be very helpful, and reveals some interesting things about cartography. Unless you are aiming for thousands of fictional maps.Īnd just to have it said: cartography is a highly specialised field, with its own set of rules and guidelines, so it is easy to work oneself into a maze. In theory, you could programme and so generate maps with SVG, but to my (very limited) knowledge of this, it would hardly be worth the effort.
There are a number of online map generators for fictional worlds, there are also a plethora of brushes and sets of brushes that will give your map a defined "feel" (unfortunately, a lot of these seems to be pirate-treasure-map-style. This would in principle apply to your software of choice, though I would strongly suggest vectorbased (Illustrator or Inkscape, as opposed to Photoshop and Gimp). You could collect a bunch of "map-brushes" from around the web, or you could create them yourself.
